BECOMING A COUNSELLOR

Becoming a Relate counsellor is a rewarding career choice, where you can make a difference to the life of many people. Relate nationally has over 2000 counsellors, all of whom receive regular supervision and support throughout their training and practice.

To become a Relate counsellor, you will need to complete the Graduate Certificate – a foundation in couple counselling. This is our entry level qualification, which takes around a year, combining theoretical study with supervised clinical practice. You will need to obtain a placement to undergo this course – please contact us to find out if we have vacancies. In addition to this Certificate, to become a Relate counsellor you will need to complete an additional 190 hours counselling – this usually takes around 2 years in total.

For those who want to go further, you can undertake a Postgraduate Diploma in Couple Therapy, which is a two-year, part time advanced couse for experienced counsellors who have worked with couples and/or families. The next step after this is our Masters Degree – a research based degree in couple therapy. This is a one-year part-time programme involving training in research methodology and evaluation, completion of a 20,000 work dissertation, and continued clinical practice. Entry is via the postgraduate diploma or equivalent plus counsellor training and counsellor casework experience.
